Which students are accepted to SUSA?
Students who are interested in improving their snowboarding skills are considered for SUSA. Just as there are different types of snowboarders, there are different types of learners. Because of our individual approach, SUSA can meet the needs of high academic achievers as well as those who have struggled through academics in larger, more traditional schools.
What is the average class size?
Average of eight students. Usually, there are no more than eleven students in a class, depending upon the course. This allows each student the time and attention they deserve with the teacher.
Will Nawa Academy help me attend a university or college after graduation?
Yes. Nawa Academy provides guidance and support with applying to colleges and universities as well as SAT Exam preparation. More good news - Nawa Academy is a fully accredited high school by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and courses are approved by the University of California system.
What is a dorm room like?
Comfortable, yet simple. Each carpeted and heated bedroom is equipped with beds, dressers, closet and a bathroom. It's up to the students to be creative and make their room unique.
How much snowboarding will I do?
Lots. During the winter season, students in our competitive team snowboard all day, three days per week. Competitions are held during certain weekends. Students who are in the recreational snowboarding group snowboard a minimum of one day per week. Also, conditions permitting, there are backcountry boarding trips and avalanche safety workshops.
Can SUSA further my future in snowboarding?
Yes. Students have the opportunity to compete and gain experience in this sport. The competitions are also a great opportunity to gain exposure in the snowboarding world.
Can beginning snowboarders apply and do well at SUSA?
Yes! Each student has consistent time to ride and work with the same coach each week. Students have entered SUSA with little or no snowboarding skills and have quickly developed their ability. All it takes is the desire to learn and improve.
What additional academic support is offered?
Academic instructors are available outside regularly scheduled classes. Also, Nawa Academy offers a learning lab for students who have learning differences. The learning lab benefits students by enhancing visual processing, improving brain integration and improving literacy skills.
How many breaks are there during the year?
There are three breaks during the year- fall, winter, and spring. Breaks are lengthy so students and their families can enjoy their time together. For example, spring break is 12 days long. The school year ends on June 1, and our graduation and award ceremonies is scheduled for June 3, 2006. Also, parental visits are encouraged, especially during competitions. Just contact the Dean of Students to coordinate visits.
